Hit-and-run suspect arrested in death of bicyclist

A 65-year-old man was struck and killed while riding his bicycle along Nine Mile Point Road in Bridge City, Louisiana. The man's lifeless body was found a little after 7 a.m. His damaged bicycle was next to him.

A 20-year-old man from Bridge City was arrested and charged with negligent homicide and felony hit-and-run in the bicyclist's death.

According to a spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, authorities have recovered a 2003 Honda Odyssey minivan that is believed to have been the vehicle the bicyclist was struck with. The minivan was found at St. Philip Street and N. Robertson Street in Bridge City.

The man who was arrested in conjunction with the hit-and-run was just in court in Orleans Parish for charges of attempted armed robbery and attempted second-degree murder, although those charges were not related to the death of the bicyclist. Those charges are from a shooting and an attempted armed robbery in September 2015.

The trial in Orleans Parish was supposed to have begun on Feb. 13, but one of the police officers with the New Orleans Police Department was not available for court and was due to testify for the prosecution. The defendant didn't appear in court the next day, which resulted in a summons being issued.

According to police, the 20-year-old man jumped into a vehicle occupied by a 22-year-old in New Orleans and tried to rob him. A struggle ensued over the firearm, with the 22-year-old victim eventually getting the gun away from the defendant. He fired at the defendant, who, according to police, took the gun back and shot the victim multiple times.

Police have not reported how they have linked the 20-year-old to the bicyclist's death. The investigation is still ongoing at this time, with police asking the public for any information in the hit-and-run accident.

If you have been injured or a loved one has been killed in a hit-and-run accident while on a bicycle, you may have cause to seek compensation from the at-fault party for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and more. An attorney can provide information on how to proceed with a civil lawsuit against the at-fault party.
