2015 accident data shows Louisiana has room for improvement

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the state of Louisiana had some weak spots in road safety in 2015. While certain areas improved, such as total traffic fatalities declining from 740 is 2014 to 726 in 2015, other areas did not.

For example, drunk driving accidents that involved a fatality have been steadily on the rise since 2011. In that year, 219 people were killed in drunk driving accidents. But in 2015, the number was 245 fatalities in DUI-related accidents.

Another area where Louisiana road safety is lacking is motorcycle accidents. In 2009, the state saw a spike in motorcycle fatalities, as 103 occurred that year. The next year there was a steep decline with only 74 motorcycle fatalities. It would appear that 2009 was a bit of an anomaly, but since the drop in 2010, motorcycle fatalities have been steadily increasing -- not unlike the DUI fatalities. In 2015, 91 people were killed in the state of Louisiana in motorcycle accidents.

So what can we learn from this data? There are a couple of lessons, and the first is that there is no stopping when it comes to improving road safety. Even when you see data that suggests roads are getting safer, that doesn't mean the work simply ends. We all have to do our part to be safe out on the roads, even when good news takes the headlines.

The other lesson here is that when you are involved in a motor vehicle accident, it is important to consider the legal side of your case. Depending on the circumstances, you could be entitled to compensation via a civil lawsuit.
